Brand Niemann Compares the Evolution of Semantic Web Technology to the “Medici Effect”

Dr. Brand Niemann, a Senior Enterprise Architect in the Office of the Chief Information Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency, is co-chairman of the Semantic Interoperability Community of Practice. He has highlighted an important factor in the development of the Semantic Web and Social Networking, that of the “Medici Effect”. The “Medici Effect” is a concept created by the entrepreneur and consultant Frans Johansson which stems from the history of the renaissance. Similarly to the revolutionary creativity witnessed in the Medici family during the Italian Renaissance, the modern day “Medici Effect” refers to the fusion of ideas from diverse disciplines, which when collide generate extraordinary innovations.

Niemann made his statements in a publication for Government Computer News http://www.gcn.com, in the context of government data sharing. However, the “Medici Effect” should be considered for the growth of technology in all aspects of the Semantic Web and Social Networking.

Government Computer News is a print and online publication of the FCW Media Group http://www.fcw.com, which produces market leading media products for technology in government, aimed towards systems integrators, IT managers, program managers and agency executives.
